How To Choose The Best Petcock For Your Vintage Motorcycle

If you are new rider, you may not know about reason behind struggling of your motor cycle and you will enter confusion state. The real fact is, flipping the fuel tank petcock. As motor cycles do not have fuel gauges, bikes should be included with fuel tank known as Motorcycle Petcock inside main fuel tank. You no need to open your gas tank every time to check at quantity of fuel. The fuel pet cock is a flip with on, off and reserve. The little switch is known as fuel pet cock. You have to set petcock in “on” position if you use your motorcycles regularly. The “off” position should be fixed while you are going to give long rest to your motor cycles. 

A good test to do is, to strap a gas can to back position of motor cycle. It is to follow you with gas can while you drive motor cycle on reserve until it stops.

Gasoline is really essential to ensure proper operation of motor cycle. It is usually remained under the control of “Fuel Control Valve”. It is also called Motorcycle Petcock

Manual Operation:

These are the original type of valve used since beginning of time. It operates on the same principal as bathroom faucet. 

“On” position should be set if your bike is going to be used for normal operation. 

“Reserve” position should be used while you run out of gas in ON position. While you switch to this position, it may take few times to refill float bowl. If you are going on road at on to reserve state, time will be very less. Therefore, make the switch and get your hands back on bars as jolt of motor upsets the bike. It is a good idea to practice this switching before you need to do it while you are stopped. 

“Off” state should be set while bike needs to remain in parking. This reduces the carburetor float valves ability to shut off gas. 

Remote Vacuum Valve:

This configuration is usually common in cruisers. It needs your bike to be checked out whether it has one Motorcycle Petcock.  

Electric Shutoff:

It is rarely used.

Gas Gauges and Trip Meters:

In the normal case of operation, owner of bike needs to have knowledge about amount of fuel balanced in tank. It can be verified though various ways. Trip meter is the most common case to accomplish this checking. It is used by a knob on newer electronic speedos. As each time, tank is filled up, it is better if you return this trip odometer into zero. You can also anticipate the timing on refueling as you run out of gas in the “On” position and look at trip meter to see the miles traveled. If you watch trip odometer regularly, you can avoid the inconvenience in restarting the bike by considering point at which bike will run out of fuel.
